Habitat for Humanity ___________________________________IN MEMORIAM Karl RiesKarl Ries, 73, passed away on January 8, 2009 in Tyler, Texas. He was born May 1, 1935 in Germany to the late Karl and Maria Ries. He was reared in Germany, moved to Canada in 1958 and then to America in 1961. He was a self-employed automobile mechanic in San Diego, California, and Virginia. In 1987 he and his wife moved to Tyler, Texas where he became well known as a freelance writer. He wrote for several newspapers including The Tyler Chronicle and authored the well-known book, Mom, What Is Peace? Mr. Ries enjoyed fishing, square dancing, and German folk dancing. He was a pilot, had his own seaplane, and loved to travel. On his last trip around the world, he served as traveling correspondent for The Tyler Chronicle. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Gisela Ries of Tyler; four sons, Thomas Ries and wife Karen of Tampa, Florida, Andy Quaye and wife Wilma of Canada, Jim Reese and wife Lauren of Atlanta Georgia, and John Ries; a daughter, Irene Ries of Atlanta Georgia and seven grandchildren.
